Moon is considered as the most important planet in Vedic astrology. It represents mind; and mind is the most powerful as well as most important entity in our entire existence. The mind is second only to soul; when it comes to importance. Since the soul itself doesn’t engage in any act/karma whatsoever; it can’t be affected by anything good or bad. Soul is simply uninvolved, unaffected and untouchable. Hence it is the mind which creates various types of desires. Such desires give birth to thoughts and thoughts are converted into actions/karmas. If such karmas are good, they may bring good results whereas they may bring bad results if they are bad. Since mind lies in the root of all this; Moon becomes the most important planet among navagraha.

Accordingly, Vedic astrology assigns supreme importance to Moon. Such importance is evident from the fact that Moon sign is considered as the birth sign and Moon nakshatra is considered as the birth nakshatra. The system of Gun Milaan used for horoscope matching is based on placements of Moon in various signs and nakshatras. The concept of Mahadashas (planetary periods) is also based on placements of Moon in various nakshatras. This gives an idea about importance of Moon in Vedic astrology.

When Moon becomes alone and deprived of the company of any other planet, both by placement and aspect, Moon as well as the horoscope may witness problems. At the same time, if there is no activity in the central houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) of such horoscope; the problem may aggravate. It means that such horoscope may be missing most of the factors which are capable of creating significant/important events. If the ninth house is also vacant or occupied by malefic planet/planets; the problem may aggravate. Such horoscope may not be worthy of much; and Kemdrum Yoga may be formed in such horoscope.

Let’s look at some others aspects related to the formation of Kemdrum Yoga. If malefic Rahu or Ketu is placed with Moon, in second or twelfth house from it; in central houses or ninth house of horoscope; Kemdrum Yoga may still be formed. This is because Rahu and Ketu don’t rule any zodiac signs. Hence they don’t represent any houses in a horoscope. It means their affairs are represented, only through the houses they are placed in. Hence when they turn malefic; they may only cause damage to the horoscope and nothing else. Accordingly, Kemdrum Yoga may be formed when they’re malefic.

Contrary to this, the other seven planets among navagraha rule zodiac signs, which means they rule houses in a horoscope. Hence if any one of them is malefic but placed in one of the aforementioned houses; it may not produce results similar to those given by malefic Rahu and Ketu. Taking an example, suppose Mars is placed in the tenth house of a horoscope in Leo. Scorpio rises in the ascendant and Mars becomes the lord of the ascendant. Suppose all other conditions for Kemdrum Yoga are met in this horoscope; except for the placement of Mars in the tenth house.

In general, Mars is partly benefic and partly malefic in horoscopes with Scorpio ascendant. Though the malefic part of Mars may tend to aggravate problems; the benefic part may help. Mars is strong in Leo and it rules the first house. Hence the placement of strong Mars in the tenth house may add strength to the first house as well as tenth house. As the first and tenth house gain strength; the overall horoscope may become stronger. When that happens; Kemdrum Yoga may not be formed effectively in such horoscope.

The concept of planets exhibiting tendencies to be benefic or malefic on the basis of the houses they rule in a horoscope has been explained in the chapter ‘Gemstones for House Lords’ of the book ‘Gemstones – Magic or Science (Revised Edition)’.

Taking another example, suppose benefic exalted Jupiter forms Hamsa Yoga in the first house of a horoscope in Sagittarius. Suppose Moon is placed in the fifth house in Aries and there is no planet in the fourth and sixth house. Kemdrum Yoga seems to be formed in the horoscope. However, the results may be a lot different in reality. Benefic Jupiter is strong in Sagittarius and it may empower the first house. Through the first house; it may empower the entire horoscope. Hence Kemdrum Yoga may not be formed in such horoscope since this placement of Jupiter alone is sufficient to bless the native with a number of good results related to many spheres of his life; including profession, health, marriage and wealth.

Suppose benefic Sun is also placed in the first house along with Jupiter; and benefic Mercury is placed in the second house in Capricorn. In this case, the horoscope may become stronger as well as more benefic and Kemdrum Yoga may not be formed.

Considering another example; suppose Moon is placed in the sixth house of a horoscope in Aquarius, malefic Rahu is placed in the eleventh house in Cancer, malefic Ketu is placed in the fifth house in Capricorn; and Malefic Mars forms Pitra Dosh in the ninth house in Taurus. Suppose a combination of Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Venus is placed in the eighth house in Aries. In this case, Kemdrum Yoga may be formed in the horoscope and it may trouble the native with a wide variety of problems.
